What’s not to love about hens? They have loads of character and like to go about their daily business - eating, preening, flying onto the various perches we offer them, dust bathing, scratching in the mud, and making a huge fuss when they have laid an egg.
My family have always kept hens, and I always fancied having a varied flock of attractive birds, and collecting eggs of different colours.
We now have that flock, and breed our own chickens for pullets for ourselves or to sell, and for cockerels for meat.
Over the years we have adapted, and learnt on the way, but the daily joy of checking the flock and collecting eggs does not go away. You can follow our lives on the smallholding via the blog, or use this link to look at posts specific to chickens.
